The component of penance involving scripture, prayer, and repentance, which may conclude with a formal prayer of absolution.

Definition

The action within the act of penance. This includes readings from scripture, hymns, prayers and homily, all leading to an examination of conscience and to an arousal of repentance. This can also conclude with a prayer of absolution, of some length, which finishes with the formula "I absolve you...".
