prayer
Personal communication with God, mediated in the New Covenant by the Holy Spirit.
Definition
Prayer is personal communication with an almighty creator. In the Old Covenant, prayer was mediated through the temple in Jerusalem under strict rules, whereas in the New Covenant, believers are the temple through the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Prayer is expected of followers of Christ and is learned through practice, meditation on Scripture, and communal participation. God answers prayer when it aligns with his purposes, such as requests for his glory, forgiveness, wisdom, spiritual strength, and the spread of the gospel.
