Definition
(1518 – 1555) Assemblies of the Estates of the (German) Holy Roman empire held in Augsburg. In the period from 1518 to 1555, five assemblies were held. The first, in 1518, is notable for the interview of Martin Luther by Cardinal Cajetan, papal legate of the Diet. The fifth Diet, in 1555, promulgated the Peace of Augsburg, which ended open warfare temporarily and gave legal recognition to Lutheranism as a religion of the Empire.
