The body of ecclesiastical law governing a Christian church, originating in the disciplinary and organizational rules (canons) established by early church councils.

Definition

The body of ecclesiastical law for the government of a Christian church. The origins of canon law lie in the enactments of the early church councils. In addition to their definitions of doctrine, general or ecumenical councils drew up canons, or rules, dealing with organization and discipline.
